Joe Penhall cracks a huge grin when I mention that the street hustle energy of his new TV detective series, Moses Jones, puts me in mind of movie legend Shaft.

‘That’s great. That’s what we were going for,’ he says before throwing Robert Altman, The Chinese Detective and Colin MacInnes, of Absolute Beginners fame, into the mix. As TV cop dramas go, Moses Jones won’t fail for lack of ambition.
